A single birch in frost on the Varanger plateau. Calm, around minus fifteen. The pink light appeared at midday in January, while the sun was still below the horizon.
On aluminium: the minimalism of this image suits the matt metal surface: one tree, open sky, clean snow.
On fine art paper: the pale pinks and soft gradients benefit from the texture of archival rag paper. Framed, the wide mount and thin oak profile suit this image particularly well.

The sun came back to Vadsø in late January, after two months below the horizon. It rises only a few degrees above the waterline and stays up for a couple of hours. This was one of those mornings. Around minus ten, calm.
On aluminium: the clean horizon and soft gold tones suit the smooth, matt surface well.
On fine art paper: the warmth in the sky sits particularly well on archival rag paper, with enough depth to hold the gradient from gold to blue.

A tidal channel running through the rock shelf along Varangerfjorden. Violet across both sky and water, calm and very cold.

The Varanger Peninsula sits at 70 degrees north, between the Varangerfjord and the open Barents Sea beyond it. It is remote, exposed and often overlooked. I photograph it through the seasons, the returning light after polar night, the fjord and the coast beyond it, and the small frozen worlds up close.
